Overview
The Sugar Land Heritage Museum and Visitor Center tells the story of Sugar Land’s industrial roots, cultural evolution, and community spirit. It serves as both a museum space and a welcome center for visitors eager to learn more about the city’s past and present.
Ownership & Management
The museum is owned by the City of Sugar Land and operated by the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to preserving and sharing local history.
Formation of the Foundation
The Sugar Land Heritage Foundation was created following the closure of the Imperial Sugar refinery in 2003.
- Incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in March 2008
- Held its first Board meeting in October 2008
- Formed with support from the City of Sugar Land and community partners
Public–Private Partnership
The museum was made possible through a partnership between:
- City of Sugar Land
- Imperial Sugar Company
- Cherokee Investments
Funding Support
The City contributed $75,000 in Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) funds to match the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation’s fundraising efforts for the museum’s buildout.
